I’ve ranted about Simplot in the past, and Micron, and Potlatch, and Butch Otter, and Mike Simpson, and the EPA. I have to admit, I didn’t know Butchie married into the Simplot family. Being the Governor of Idaho and part of the Simplot family… well, that doesn’t sound so great given his and Simplot’s horrific environmental record. Regardless, these a fore mentioned folks have really done some damage to the thick forests and majestic rivers known as Idaho.
It’s a downright shame that it took coverage of a two-headed fish on The Daily Show to finally shine a light one of the many environmental atrocities that occur in the state with the largest amount of untouched, pristine roadless forests.
Heard enough? Good! Now, that the heat is on – let’s turn it up a few notches!
The airing of the above video sent Simplot, the EPA and even local marketing and PR companies into quite the scramble as they attempted to address this dire situation. I can’t wait to hear the usual, un-scientific-based response that is so atypical of Simplot, Butch Otter, Mike Simpson and the likes. Prepare yourselves for a disinformation campaign to roll out soon.
Government, local businesses and citizens should embrace the number one reason why people take pay cuts to live and work in Idaho (the wilderness) and protect it. Last I looked, fishing alone brings in bucket-loads of revenue for the state and area businesses (we are talking in the millions here). Those two reasons alone, by far, outweigh the destruction caused by failing our duty as stewards of the environment, wilderness and wildlife.
As for the local marketing and PR companies; shame on you for trying to find some way to deflect this under the guise of protecting the local economy instead of addressing the true problem. Yet another band-aide won’t solve anything.
Serious thanks goes out to the Greater Yellowstone Coalition and Aasif and The Daily Show for their efforts with this.
