Taking Channel 6 to the Hot Springs

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

Kevin and Lincoln

When KIVI Channel 6 anchor Lincoln Graves approached me a couple months ago in regard to a hot springs venture, I was hesitant. In the same way that I am regarding IdahoHotSprings.com and this blog. Believe it or not, it’s not my intention to drive large amounts of people to hot springs. It’s actually to educate newbie and veteran soakers alike. However, after I was able to talk with Lincoln, I found out it was for a special segement called “Idaho Green Living“, and that I could talk about the environment as well as protecting hot springs. Any hesistation I previously had, dissipated.

Middle Fork Payette River Ford

This morning I took Kevin (photographer/cameraman), Lincoln (anchor) and a longtime fellow hot springer with me to a hot springs in the Boise National Forest. The event went great, Lincoln and Kevin did an excellent job and everyone seemed to have a good time, myself included.

An easy ford, low amounts of trash and beautiful Boise National Forest scenery made the soak just that much more stellar.

The segment is going to air on Wednesday night, July 16th, 10pm and again on Thursday during the morning show. There will be a version on KIVI’s website as well.

AIR DATE UPDATE!!

Due to breaking news the “Idaho Green Living” segment will now air on July 30th.

People who have vacation homes in orlando frequently pick the midwest airlines for their flights to orlando. Since they don’t have to spend on the hotel, they can spare the money for the airline ticket and occasionally may also be seen traveling on the emirates airline.

Boiling Spings Hot Springs Taking Summer 07 Off

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

The Boise National Forest website and recreation.gov are both reporting that the Boiling Springs Guard Station, located north of Crouch and about 2.5 hours from Boise, will be closed for repairs until September 2007.

I would imagine that the late-season, riverside pools that are near the campground of the same name are still a viable soak. However, the more private pools, located near the Guard Station, will more than likely be closed until September 2007.

Stand Up for Wolves in Boise – TODAY!

Tuesday, March 6th, 2007

Today’s the day – finally a centralized effort of do-gooders composed of all types of those into the outdoors coming together to fight the good fight. It is time to protect Idaho wolves my friends.

When: Tuesday, March 6
Public Meeting from
3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Public Hearing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: Boise Convention Center on the Grove
850 W. Front Street, Boise, ID (
view map/directions)

Just to clear the air, here’s a 2-minute wolf primer: Wolf Myth Busting – The Truth About Wolves

Today’s meeting and hearing will hopefully be a stark contrast to the embarrassing blood-thirsty pro-wolf killing rally lead by political mastermind Butch Otter. I bet he has a room in one of his mansions that is made completely out of otter skin…. his war room where he dons an otter skin suit, sits on his otter throne and contemplates his next move.

Please, if you live in the Treasure Valley come to the Pro-Wolf rally tonight! We need every last one of you – the wolves need you even more!

The Bush Administration is poised to open the door to mass killings of wolves in the Northern Rockies by removing them from the endangered species list. Public hearings have been scheduled in western states — and a hearing taking place on March 6 in Boise will be our only chance to oppose this deadly scheme in person in Idaho.

Governor Otter has announced that if the gray wolf loses federal protection, he wants to see 550 of Idaho’s 650 wolves killed. Putting the wolves right at the threshold margin for going back on the endangered species list; which then leads to costly reintroductions efforts – just like the one we are still paying for.

I really hope you’ll join us at the hearing to make your opposition felt. Everyone attending will have the opportunity, if they wish, to speak publicly for two or three minutes against the delisting proposal.

When: Tuesday, March 6
Public Meeting from
3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Public Hearing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: Boise Convention Center on the Grove
850 W. Front Street, Boise, ID (
view map/directions)

The federal government once allowed our Northern Rockies wolves to be shot, harassed, and poisoned into near extinction. If wolves lose critical protections under the Endangered Species Act, Idaho plans to immediately slaughter all but 100 wolves in the state. And, hundreds more wolves could be killed on sight in Wyoming by aerial gunners – not hunters!

As a resident of Idaho, your comments will have an especially big impact in stopping this terrible plan. Conservationists from all over the world are counting on you, so please take some time out of your busy schedule to be a voice for these magnificent creatures.

The public meeting will take place from 3:00-5:00 p.m. During the meeting, you can learn more about the federal proposal and take part in a question and answer session. Written comments will be accepted at this time.

Then, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the public hearing, you can offer testimonials in person about the importance of preserving crucial protections for our wolves.

I hope you can make it to Tuesday’s public meeting. After all, if we don’t speak up for the wolves, who will?

When: Tuesday, March 6
Public Meeting from
3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Public Hearing from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Where: Boise Convention Center on the Grove
850 W. Front Street, Boise, ID (

Boise Mayor Bieter to Fight the Good Fight

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

Remember that cyanide leech mine proposed on the Boise River near Atlanta Idaho? Unfortunately, the mine is still a reality. However, today Boise Mayor Bieter announced his opposition to the gold mine.

Announce your opposition – send an electronic message right now!

That’s right, cyanide – Atlanta Gold, the name of the Canadian mining company, has plans to build an open-pit cyanide heap-leach gold mine in THE HEADWATERS OF THE BOISE RIVER!

This mine threatens the health of all who habitat and enjoy the river. Our fish, wildlife, public health, safety and drinking water are all at risk! Leach mining has been banned in all but 1 other state besides Idaho because of the resulting detrimental effects on the environment.

Protect the Boise River!

Sunrise Soaking at Skinnydipper Hot Springs

Sunday, January 21st, 2007

Skinnydipper, AKA Mile Marker 4/Deer Creek Hot Springs, is one of just a handful of hot springs that are within 1-2 hours from Boise, Idaho. Drive time from Boise is approximately 1 hour. Skinnydipper is Idaho’s most recent hot springs discovery. In the 1990s, Hot Springs Harley found and cultivated the hot springs with Keeper Ken’s help into what it is today. The .25 mile hike up from the Banks-Lowman Highway pullout is steep and treacherous at times. A loose-knit group of volunteers labeled “Keepers” maintain the trail, pools and plumbing. Partying can get a bit out of hand, especially on the weekends and during the summer nights. Fights, vandalism and vehicle break-ins have been known to occur during peak usage.

A chain of large and deep, rock and mortar pools are located high above the busy Banks-Lowman highway. Water is piped-in with the ability to quickly adjust the temperature with valves for each pool. Please note, the Keepers request that you leave the plumbing and valves alone.

Be wary of the mud and rock slides that are a common occurrence along the Banks-Lowman Highway, especially during Spring and Fall. The trail up to the pools can get slippery and FAST! The same goes for the winter season, except the trail is layered with thick sheets of ice and snow. Rain gear is always nice to have for ‘just in case’ reasons. Otherwise, Skinny is accessible virtually all year around! Skinnydipper is no longer posted as having nighttime closure in effect.

There is a small 2-person tent sized spot slightly east of the party pool that is on a flat rock wedged into the mountain side. Falling off this rock ledge could be fatal so sleep cautiously and expect plenty of rowdy nighttime/overnight visitors. There is a slight possibility of camping above the springs as well. I have yet to further investigate this. Boise National Forest campgrounds are abundant in this area. However, the close ones are around 10-15 minutes away from Skinny’s pullout.

01.21.07 Trip Report

Too long has it been since my last visit. Our early arrival yielded to a slippery climb up the icy trail to the hot springs pools. We made excellent use out of our trekking poles. All 3 pools were in excellent conditions. In fact, I would have to say they are as clean as I’ve ever witnessed. The new plumbing in place is definitely being utilized properly. We could have used brighter flashlights as we arrived a couple hours prior to sunrise.

I chatted with a solo-soaker shortly before we began departure preparations. The friendly guy headed down to the lower ‘party’ pool where he proceeded to line up his brewskies on a rock. This guy was a rockstar, drinking beer at dawn. I hope he’s careful on the way down. It was a bit brisk getting out; our coats were adorned with ice crystals on any part of the fabric susceptible to moisture.

After filling two bags with trash I was out of space; this being the most disappointing facet of the trip. It seemed like most of the trash came from one or two individuals the previous night. I found a broken flashlight (the batteries were further down the hill), clothing, full can of chili, full can of sparks and a bunch of other garbage carelessly scattered all over the place between the parking pullout and pools.

All it takes is one.

Rating: A+
