The 2017 Total Solar Eclipse

On Monday, August 21, 2017, one of nature’s most stellar events will come to pass – a total solar eclipse. Day will turn into night for around 2 minutes for those of us located within the path of totality. Which, reaches from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina and engulfs 27 hot springs in Idaho and 9 hot springs in Oregon.

Map of Hot Springs in Idaho and Oregon in the Path of Totality

Due to the large number of natural hot springs within totality (36), I decided to make a Google Map showing the path of totality that contains hot springs in Idaho and Oregon. Click on the map pins to learn more about each hot spring. FYI, you may need to zoom in.

Interesting Natural (Rare) Occurrences to Look for During the Eclipse

According to CNET and NASA, there are a number of incredible spectacles to look for both before and after the total solar eclipse.

Animal Night/Morning Behavior
Animals will start their evening songs and routines before the total solar eclipse and morning routines after.

Starry Day
During the eclipse, the sky will get so dark that stars will look just as bright as they would during the evening. You’ll even be able to see planets like Jupiter and Venus.

Shadow Bands
Right before a total eclipse, little snake-like shadows (origin unknown to NASA) will appear to slither across the ground.

Bailey’s Beads
Bailey’s beads are pearls of sunlight shining through the valleys and mountains of the moon visible around the edges of the moon as it passes over the sun.

Corona Rainbows
Corona rainbows occur when the air is full of water molecules.

360-degree Sunset
During totality, you can see a what looks like a sunset in every direction around the horizon.

THE NIGHT has a thousand eyes,
And the day but one;
Yet the light of the bright world dies
With the dying sun.

The mind has a thousand eyes,
And the heart but one;
Yet the light of a whole life dies
When love is done.
